On Puts a Marathon Brand's Name Next to the Word 'Unwind'

A running shoe company built on carbon plates and a proprietary foam cushion just released a fall collection whose entire premise is slowing down, fronted by a musician whose catalog resists exactly that kind of pace.

The image On sent out on August 20th shows FKA twigs draped rather than laced: soft fabric, dim light, a body at rest instead of a body mid-stride. The copy accompanying it uses the word "unwind." This is a technical performance brand, one built its name on a cushioning midsole and a carbon-fiber plate marketed for split-second gains, choosing to launch a fall collection whose entire visual grammar is stillness.

On has spent 2026 running two tracks in parallel. Earlier this month the brand announced a seven-medal haul at the European Athletic Championships, an unambiguous performance credential delivered through its sponsored athletes. Weeks later, the same brand is fronting a collection with an artist whose music is defined by suspension, hesitation, and unresolved rhythm rather than propulsion. FKA twigs does not run. She does not appear in marketing as someone who runs. She appears as someone who occupies clothes slowly, in interiors, away from a finish line.

This is a performance sportswear label building a lifestyle wardrobe in public, using a musician known for interior, unhurried work as the face of that shift. The category is not new to the industry: Nike has done it with basketball players turned style icons, Salomon has done it with trail gear turned street silhouette. What is specific to On is the speed of the pivot relative to its own athletic identity, which it reinforced with a medal count just days before this release. The brand is not choosing between performance and lifestyle positioning. It is running both simultaneously, in the same month, to two different audiences who may never see the other campaign.

The risk in that split is not confusion so much as dilution: a technical credibility built over years of shoe engineering does not automatically transfer to a fashion credibility built on styling and casting. FKA twigs lends the collection an art-world seriousness that a track medal cannot buy, but she also has no functional relationship to what On actually manufactures. The collection is, in the end, apparel: soft goods, styled photography, an artist loan. It belongs on the fashion side of the ledger, not the performance side, whatever badge sits on the label.

On has now built a wardrobe line that lives entirely apart from its shoe. That line is fashion retail, full stop, and the medal count will not be the metric anyone uses to judge it.
