Contribute to the Index

The Index encourages outside voices. A contributor is not staff, and not a byline the Index promises to publish. A contributor is someone whose perspective earns a slot because it covers territory the staff writers cannot reach.

That distinction is the whole test. A second opinion on an observation a staff writer already made is not a contribution. The Index runs contributors to widen the record, not to thicken it.

The voice must cost something to imitate.

The territory that is already taken

Four writers hold four lanes. A pitch inside one of them is a pitch the desk can already fill.

What the desk is short of is a fifth kind of seeing. The hospitality operator who knows why a room works. The architectural critic. The investor read. The community organiser. The working scientist. Bring the angle none of the four can take.

What qualifies

1. Territory adjacent to the four lanes, not inside them.
2. A voice distinct enough to hold its own page. Anything that reads as a generic magazine byline fails here.
3. Published work that shows the perspective already holds at length. A newsletter, a zine, a public memo, a paper. It does not have to be a masthead.
4. The ability to carry the rule stack without being walked through it.

That last one is the one people underestimate. Cultural Integrity, the Editorial Trinity, the Verification Protocol, no link-outs, no em-dashes, Kill List discipline, a Machine Summary before drafting, and total accuracy on every concrete claim. The standard does not move for contributors.

The 90-day rule

A contributor cannot publish about a brand any staff writer has covered in the previous 90 days. The cooldown runs from the date of the staff piece, not the date of the move behind it.

If a pitch overlaps recent staff coverage it comes back with the date of the piece it collides with, and either an uncovered angle worth taking or a declined note. The rule does not cut the other way: staff are not restricted by contributor coverage.

What happens to a submission

A first piece runs every gate the staff run. Fact Check before the draft locks, the draft itself, Fact Check again after, Copy Desk, Art Desk, and a final review by the Chief Editor.

That final review asks one question the staff never face: does this voice add a perspective none of the four can cover? If the answer is no, the piece is returned, whatever its quality. Additive is the bar, not good.

If the piece publishes, the contributor is active, capped at two pieces a month through Year One. If it does not, the nomination closes and the writing comes back with specific notes on what would have made it work.
