NikeSKIMS opened its first mainland China retail presence in Shanghai this week. Kim Kardashian appeared at the launch. Kris Jenner and Khloé Kardashian appeared alongside her. The brand's sizing runs from XXS to 4X, with alterations offered on select products, a detail the brand is using to differentiate the China rollout from existing shapewear competitors in that market.

The launch lands inside a specific number. Reuters reported on 1 October 2026 that Nike's quarterly Greater China sales fell 26 percent, a decline the company attributed to local competition and persistent weakness in the region. Dao Insights, covering the NikeSKIMS opening directly, called this a problem that has been persisting for a while, a framing that undersells the scale of the gap: a 26 percent drop is not a soft patch, it is a collapse in a market Nike has spent two decades building.
The operational record shows two Nikes moving in opposite directions inside the same ninety days. Core Nike, the swoosh, the basketball and running lines that built the China business, is shrinking there. NikeSKIMS, a joint venture less than two years old globally, is expanding there, opening its first owned mainland store at the exact moment the parent company's China numbers are published.
This is not a coincidence of timing. It is a sequencing choice. A declining core brand does not usually get to launch a premium sub-brand into the same market without that sub-brand absorbing some of the core brand's reputational drag. NikeSKIMS is being positioned to avoid that drag entirely: separate campaign, separate casting, separate sizing story, a pop-up format borrowed from beauty and streetwear rather than performance footwear.
Nike's China retreat has been documented for several quarters now. What has not been documented with the same attention is the inverse move happening inside the same corporate structure. The NikeSKIMS China launch is not a Nike story in the markets coverage. It is being covered, including by Dao Insights, as a fashion and retail story, with its own tags, its own casting, its own numbers. The sizing range and the alterations service get the headline. The 26 percent figure sits one paragraph down, if it appears at all.
Nike has not disclosed if NikeSKIMS revenue is reported inside Greater China segment numbers or held separately. The company's quarterly filings as of October 2026 do not break out the joint venture by region. One brand is retreating from China in the numbers investors see. Another brand wearing the same corporate ownership is expanding into China in the numbers consumers see. Both are true on 8 October 2026, and both are Nike's.
