W139 Gives Up Its Own Walls Again, on Schedule

W139 has announced the third edition of W139 hosts..., the open call that hands its Spuistraat exhibition space to outside makers and collectives for a fixed stretch of the calendar, running from 26 February through 25 April 2027.

The open call's own graphic treats the format as fixture, not event, before a single maker is named.

W139 announced on 7 October 2026 the third edition of W139 hosts..., an open call that gives the institution's own Spuistraat exhibition space over to outside makers and collectives for a fixed window. The 2027 edition runs from 26 February to 25 April, roughly nine weeks during which the gallery's regular programming yields entirely to whoever the call selects.

The first edition ran in 2022. The second followed in 2023. A gap year sat between the second edition and this announcement, and another full year sits between the announcement and the exhibition's opening. That is the detail the press release states plainly but does not frame: W139 is not responding to a moment, it is executing a format on an established interval, now in its fourth calendar year of existence as a recurring institutional decision rather than a one-off experiment.

W139 opened in 1979 as one of Amsterdam's original squatted exhibition spaces, built on the premise that artists should control the means of showing their own work. The hosts... format, inaugurated in 2022, inverts that founding premise in a narrow but real way: instead of artists controlling how their work is shown, W139 as an institution controls who gets to control the space, and for how long. The open call does not dissolve W139's curatorial authority. It relocates that authority to the level of selection: W139 chooses the makers, the makers then inherit full editorial control of the walls for nine weeks.

What makes the 2027 edition worth naming now, more than four months before it opens, is the interval itself. 2022 to 2023 was a one-year cadence. 2023 to 2027 is a four-year gap. Either W139 tried an annual rhythm and found it unsustainable against its core programming calendar, or the format was always meant to recur on no fixed schedule and the four-year silence is simply what happened when staff, funding, or booking pressure intervened. The institution's own announcement does not say which, and that omission is itself a data point: a space built on artist self-determination has not yet decided whether ceding its walls is an annual commitment or an occasional gesture.

The open call closes on a date W139 has not yet published inside this announcement, which means the next dated decision belongs to the selection panel, not the makers. Whoever gets chosen inherits nine weeks of total curatorial freedom over one of Amsterdam's oldest artist-run spaces. W139 should publish the closing date and name the next edition's year now, before the four-year gap becomes the format's default rhythm.
