A Korean Designer's Weathering Technique Lands on a Performance Running Shoe

JiyongKim has spent his career making clothes look sun-damaged on purpose. PUMA just put that philosophy on a sneaker built for speed, not patina.

The CELL Geo has always been a shoe about speed. PUMA built the silhouette as a futuristic performance runner, all sculpted midsole and sharp architectural overlays, the kind of shape that photographs best standing still under studio light because it looks like it's already moving. JiyongKim takes that shape and ages it on purpose, running solar fading, environmental staining, and distressed surface treatment across the upper until the shoe looks like it has lived outside for a decade.

This is menswear design, specifically the experimental wing of it that treats fading and staining as a material process rather than a flaw to engineer away. JiyongKim built his name on exactly this kind of worn-in study: garments designed to look weather-shaped before anyone has worn them outside. That territory has stayed largely separate from performance footwear, where brands spend enormous budgets on making a shoe look new, consistent, repeatable across every unit in a production run. A technical runner that announces itself through staining and distress marks is a different value system laid directly on top of the first one.

The CELL line itself belongs to PUMA's archive of early 2010s performance silhouettes, shoes that were engineering stories first, built to sell a cushioning technology rather than a design language. Running that era's hardware through a designer whose entire practice is about simulating time passing creates a shoe that is, in effect, aging twice: once through the CELL platform's own nostalgia cycle, and once through JiyongKim's applied weathering. Buyers get a shoe that looks like it has survived two separate decades it was never actually present for.

The CELL platform was never built with surface narrative in mind. Its value proposition was cushioning technology, sold through sculpted midsoles and sharp architectural overlays designed to photograph as new under studio light. JiyongKim's solar fading and environmental staining run directly against that original engineering story, replacing a pitch about consistent performance with a pitch about accumulated history.

That friction is the point rather than a flaw. A technical runner is supposed to erase the appearance of time passing, while JiyongKim's practice exists to simulate exactly that passage before a shoe ever touches pavement. Layering the second logic onto the first means the CELL Geo carries two separate stories about where it has been: PUMA's archive nostalgia for an early 2010s silhouette, and JiyongKim's applied distress marks suggesting a decade of outdoor wear that never happened.

Performance footwear manufacturing depends on sameness across every unit in a production run, which makes the distressed surface treatment on this upper a deliberate inversion of the category's usual promise. The shoe still functions as a sculpted, architectural runner underneath, but its finished object now carries a worn-in study grafted onto a platform that was built to look untouched.

What makes the pairing specific rather than generic collaboration dressing is that JiyongKim's aging philosophy is menswear's version of a controlled variable, repeatable and intentional, while performance footwear's entire manufacturing logic depends on controlled, repeatable sameness across every pair. Putting the first inside the second does not blend two aesthetics so much as graft one discipline's working method onto another discipline's finished object. The CELL Geo now belongs to both categories at once: a technical runner, and a wearable study in simulated time.
