ICICLE Hires Gucci's Former Creative Director. The Timeline Says Something Else.

Sabato De Sarno left Gucci in February 2025. Nineteen months later, a Shanghai-based brand with a thirty-year domestic history has hired him to design its first overseas-facing collection.

Nineteen months. That is the gap between Sabato De Sarno's exit from Gucci in February 2025 and his appointment at ICICLE, announced this week. Thirty years. That is how long ICICLE has operated as a domestic Chinese brand before this hire, which the company has framed as the mechanism for its overseas expansion. One designer, two timelines, one stated purpose: entering foreign markets by installing a name foreign markets already recognize.

ICICLE's own language, as reported by Dao Insights, ties the appointment directly to expansion: De Sarno's first collection for the brand will be a 2027-28 autumn/winter line, arriving to coincide with the company's thirtieth anniversary. Two institutional facts, bundled into one release: a three-decade domestic record, and a first international creative hire, timed together rather than separately. The operational record does not show a brand building an international reputation from its own design language over those thirty years. It shows a brand acquiring one.

De Sarno's own record at Gucci ran three years, from 2022 to his departure in 2025. Three years is short by the standard of the house he left: Tom Ford ran eleven years at Gucci, Frida Giannini nine, Alessandro Michele seven. De Sarno's tenure was the shortest of the modern creative director era at that house, and it ended without a signature codified the way Michele's maximalism or Ford's minimalism had been. What ICICLE is importing, in operational terms, is not a proven design language. It is a name that carries the residue of Gucci's own institutional prestige, detachable from the specific work De Sarno produced there.

This is the pattern now visible across at least three moves this year: a European luxury name exits a house under three to five years of tenure, and within eighteen months resurfaces at a company outside the traditional Paris or Milan axis, tasked with signaling global credibility rather than building a new aesthetic from scratch. The count matters more than any single hire. When a designer's value transfers faster than his design record can be evaluated, the hire is buying the departure itself, not the portfolio.

ICICLE's release frames the hire around a 2027-28 collection and a thirty-year anniversary. The operational fact underneath is an eighteen-month gap between a departure from Gucci and an appointment at a brand that has never before employed a Western creative director. That gap is the number worth tracking, not the collection date.
